About API Costs (Self-Hosted)

Self-hosted users pay Anthropic directly for Claude API usage. Here's what to expect.

What You'll Need

  • A Claude API account from Anthropic
  • API credits loaded on your account
  • Your API key entered in Loremaster settings

Typical Usage

A typical 3-4 hour session with moderate AI interaction uses approximately:

  • ~100k-300k tokens (varies by conversation length)
  • Prompt caching reduces repeated context costs
  • Usage monitor helps you track and budget

Cost Control

  • Set monthly token limits in settings
  • Prompt caching automatically reduces costs
  • Conversation compaction keeps context lean
  • Private GM mode for efficient iteration

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Hosted and Self-Hosted?

Hosted (Patreon): We run the server infrastructure for you. Just install the module, connect with Patreon, and play. No API keys, no server setup. The hosted service also includes RAG-enhanced models for richer, more context-aware responses and access to shared adventure libraries where GMs can publish and share content. You pay a monthly subscription based on how much you use.

Self-Hosted (Gumroad): You run your own proxy server and use your own Claude API key from Anthropic. One-time purchase, unlimited usage, full control over your data. Note that RAG-enhanced models and the shared adventure library are not available with the self-hosted version.

Which option is cheaper?

It depends on your usage. The hosted Basic tier ($5/month) is great for light users. Heavy users may find self-hosting more economical since you pay Anthropic's API rates directly (roughly $3-15 per million tokens depending on the model). Self-hosted also has no monthly cap.

Do I need technical skills for self-hosting?

Basic familiarity with running a server helps. You'll need to run a Node.js application (or use Docker) and configure a few environment variables. If you've ever set up a Foundry server, you can handle it. Detailed setup guides are included.

Can I use the hosted version with The Forge?

Yes! The hosted version works seamlessly with The Forge and other Foundry hosting providers. Self-hosted requires your Foundry instance to be able to reach your proxy server.

What game systems are supported?

Loremaster has full tool support for Year Zero Engine games (Coriolis, Forbidden Lands, Alien RPG, Vaesen, etc.). Basic chat functionality works with any system, and more system adapters are in development.

What happens if I exceed my token limit?

On hosted tiers, you'll be notified when approaching your limit. You can upgrade your tier at any time. With self-hosted, there's no limit - you pay Anthropic directly for what you use.

Can I switch between hosted and self-hosted?

Yes! Your conversation history and settings are stored per-world. You can switch modes in the module settings anytime. Some users start with hosted and move to self-hosted later, or vice versa.

Do I get updates with both options?

Yes. The Foundry module updates automatically. Hosted users get server updates instantly. Self-hosted users can pull the latest proxy server code from GitHub.
